Trailer Theft Prevention Advice from Bedfordshire RCAT

Bedfordshire RCAT have seen a recent increase in the number of trailer thefts being reported across the county. Trailers remain a popular target for criminals due to their value, ease of movement, and the difficulties in identifying them when they have not been security marked.

We are urging owners of agricultural, plant, livestock and general-purpose trailers to take a few simple steps to help reduce the risk of theft:

Store trailers in secure locations whenever possible

Use hitch locks, wheel clamps and heavy-duty chains

Park trailers behind locked gates or other vehicles to prevent easy removal

Record the trailer's VIN/chassis number and keep photographs of it

Consider fitting tracking devices for added security

Security mark your trailer to make it easier to identify and more difficult for criminals to sell on
